Raya Eve 2008

One advantage to not having the new moon sighted is that Eid / Hari Raya eve is more relaxed with most of the preparations for the big day completed. This evening the whole family broke fast together followed by prayers and the Hari Raya takbir. The kids also received their green packets from their grandparents. For the benefit of those unfamiliar with Eid, unlike Christmas children do not receive presents but money from family and friends. The celebration of Hari Raya in Brunei is based on "open houses". People receive guests in their homes. Most people have set days but for us it will be for the next three days and as in previous years we will receive several hundred over the three days. We will serve, food, drinks, cakes and biscuits to our guests and it is also tradition now to give green packets to young visitors.

We also took family pictures - something we have not attempted for for many years. With the kids getting older it was a bit easier this time with the exception of Ayden and Jack who were more interested in the prawn crackers. Still they did very well and this is probably the first photograph of my parents and all their grandchildren.

At last a photograph of Rizal and Nurul
And another family picture - two in one year!
It is also tradition to decorate your home with coloured lights but most like us have reverted to the traditional oil lamps.
